Tries to give you everything right there, right now. - By: Dan, 08 Aug 2010
Just Cause 2 is designed to set the player upin one action stunt after another. You are an action figure style tough guy completing missions for various organisations whilst free to roam over a large exotic island. Large fuel installations are there to be dramatically blown up, attack helicopters are there to be taken down, vehicles are there for crunching car chases, heights are there to be parachuted down & ambushes are there to batman style grapple hook flights into the middle of. The game engine & controls are perfectly adequatein helping you realise your stunts. It can all be exciting. The James Bond/Face Off of the GTA style games.
It can also be equally boring. When everything can be blown up or jumped off or shot at with little pacing or anticipation it strangely all becomes very so so. For a game that gives you everything & gives it all to you now, everything quickly loses its wonder. After blowing up my nth installation, jumping off my nth building & I'd sped my way through the nth car chase I sat thinking to myself; do I really want to go through any of that again? The answer was no. Just Cause 2 is a bit like eating chocolate. Just because the sugar hit & chewy sweet bar is fantastic, I don't want ten bars. Greatin small doses.
Completely unexpected fun - By: R. Yakob, 03 Aug 2010
I bought this game over the weekend as it was on sale (I picked it up for less than £15) not expecting much from it but I'm actually enjoying it far more than Star Craft II which I also bought last week.
Just Cause 2 is shameless fun without being arrogant & to me is a far superior game to other sandbox titles I've played including the GTA & Far Cry series. How can this be considering those series are both critically acclaimed? I'm not sure what it is exactly, but I've enjoyed myself more with Just Cause 2 than either of those titles. Sure there are complaints about it being repetitive (but how many games aren't? World of Warcraft, Bioshock, Team Fortress 2? All of them are very repetitive.
The important thing for me is that it's mad amounts of fun, so the repetitiveness is just what I'm after because I've not had a momentin the first 7 hours of gameplay that I haven't had a smile on my face playing it.
It's a cheap game - give it a go & see for yourself if you like it or not.
An enormously fun and visually stunning adventure! - By: GizmoGeek, 01 Aug 2010
Just Cause2 is an open-world adventure game with an incredible amount of stunning visuals & is quite possibly among the best games I've played on a PC.
The game is setin the South-Asian island chain of Panau, where your protagonist must bring down the (corrupt) regime; armed with a variety of weapons, useful tools (such as your parachute & grapple hook) & the ability to take over tons of land, sea & air vehicles.
The central ideain the game however, is to wreak havoc & cause "chaos" (that earns you points & bonuses) by blowing up stuff - military installations, buildings, vehicles, you name it...you can probably blow it up. This is one thing the game does remarkably well & the well-designed explosions often seem spectacular!
I know some people have said the explosions & stunts get boring after a while but I think its is a matter of personal taste - if you don't like the idea of jumping from a helicoptor, landing on a moving jeep & planting an explosive on it, this game probably isn't for you.
Similarly, if you're a fan of tactical/stealth combat or FPS-style shooting action with the AI intelligently taking cover, again, this game isn't for you.
This game is for people looking for (mindless?) fast-paced action; & action it delivers. In addition to the weapons & vehicles, you are also equipped with a refoldable parachute (for jumping off heights) & a grapple hook you use to grab onto surfaces. The two offer an interesting combination of moves & stunts; for instance you can fire the hook to a high surface & launch yourself airborne using the parachute, you can tether your enemies to a rocket & shoot it, you can tether cars to the road to crash it...the possibilities are many, & fun to try out.
So why only four stars?
There are a few things I don't like & keep me from giving this a perfect rating:
First off, the shooting mechanics is quite loose & the auto-targetting automatically locks onto the nearest targetin view. This can be a bit of a pain for precise shooting; say if you're trying to shoot a barrel next to a soldier for instance.
Next is the driving. There are a huge amount of vehicles to drive; cars, motorcycles, jet planes, boats, copters, even a passenger aircraft.
Unfortunately the controls are quite unforgiving; the character controls differ from vehicle controls completely (especially for planes & vehicles movingin 3-dimensions) & it takes quite a while getting used to it. I didn't like it.
Having said that, I still like the game despite these flaws because it looks so good & plays well. The graphics are technically proficient & there are several graphics options you can adjust for playing on a not-so-high-end pc (which is unlike numerous other PS3/xbox ports that let you suffer on a slightly slower laptop).
In conclusion, this is an excellent, beautiful game which falls short of perfect because of a few flaws, & of course wouldn't be a favorite with FPS lovers, but is otherwise highly recommended for all fans of blowing up stuff!
DO NOT BUY THIS FOR PC - By: G. Rothwell, 27 May 2010
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear - games like this should NOT be advertised or even made or even conceived for PC - Here I am with a powerful computer but the graphics are too much for it. Very disappointed...so is my son!
