Atmosphere and Story Compensates for Mediocre Gunplay - By: MR J T HAYWARD, 09 Sep 2010
This is a game with several shortcomings that are generally going to be forgiven by hardcore gamers who are willing to invest enough time & effort to absorb the full experience. The gun play is generally decent, with interesting post-apocalyptic, cobbled-together weapons, but the it lacks the visceral 'oomph' of most current gen FPS games. Most notable are the lack of animations to indicate the collision of your bullets with some of the enemies that you facein the game. With no feedback for injury or damage, the tactical depth to gameplay is stunted.
The load times are also a little disruptive but the narration that covers them up does a good job of delivering the story & maintaining the atmosphere. And speaking of the atmosphere, this is the true star of the game. The way the post-nuclear fallout Moscow underground is realised & fleshed out, truly draws youin to the experience. It feels gritty & depressing. Dark & foreboding. The characters you meet along the way are many (perhaps too many & it does become a little hard to keep track of who is who after a while) & well scripted. The broken russian english is, for the most part, credible too.
A lot of the textures are beautiful. However, don't expect AAA production values across the board. This game is a meaty & interesting gaming experience for dedicated gamers who are looking for something engaging to lose themselves in. A strong 8 out of 10 for hardcore gamers.
An Artyomic Bomb - By: Michael Gorton, 08 Sep 2010
I was completely immersedin this game for days!
Fans of REAL survival horror games, not these kids who look for mindless 'guns & ammo' & no more, will really appreciate this game. The pressure of finding gas-mask filters, the ammo-conservation priority, the need to manually charge your equipment, all adds to the grim post-apocalyptic atmosphere that makes this game so intriguing. Somehow it seems so believable, not matter how boring you may be when it comes to realismin games.
The story may be cut short a little, with a somewhat anti-climatic ending, but I cannot wait for a sequel. Great replay value, I just can't stop.

Excellent - By: Moses Jones, 29 Aug 2010
Having read the ign review I wasn't expecting much, but I thought I'd try it out anyway. Simply put ign was wrong(in my opinion), I give this game 10/10. The atmosphere & depth of the game is staggering. Definetly worth buying.
disappointing - By: M. horrell, 20 Aug 2010
i found metro to be very frustrating to play. i've been playing 'shooters' since robocop on the commodore 64 (cod, fallout, deadspace, fear, crysis, gears of war, halo, soldier of fortune, doom, quake etc etc) & so have seen a few.
I set off on metro on medium difficulty, but within a couple of levels had to turn down to 'easy' because of repeated, failed, attempts to clear short sections of the game was driving me mad! also, more than once, i got killed/trapped & respawnedin a situtaion where i would be instantly killed/trapped again. Early weapons are very poor & leave you thrashing the game pad, trying to swap weapons if ammo runs out etc. Alsoin the game, when trying to use stealth i often seemed to bein total blackness & unable to see enemies who (conversly) were able to pick me off from a distance with ease! Missions were poorly explained & i was usually just following a compass bearing with no idea why or what i was trying to acheive until i stumbled over a highlighted object or area. Anyway to prevent my tv & xbox from being flung out of the window i have resigned metro 2033 back to its case.
