Sensational. It really does do it all. - By: Clashcity Rocker, 23 Aug 2010
Supports all the latest standards, including Blu-Ray, Wifi, HDMI & 3D gaming & movies (3D TV needed obviously). This is the perfect console to accompany a HDTV as this little baby has the lot. The games on it are mind blowing, especiallyin 3D, but evenin 2D, with some great PS3 exclusives that you can't play anywhere else. Franchises like Uncharted, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance, Motorstorm & many more including what's sure to be the biggest game of 2010 - Gran Turismo 5. All PS3 models also play PSone games, either from disk or download from the Playstation Store.
The build quality is great, the unit is whisper quiet, & it's painless to get up & running. It's of course free to play online, there are no hidden costs here, aside from perhaps a £5 HDMI cable needed. However it's well worth checking out the PlayStation+ subscription service, it costs £40/year but offers up loads of free games & content (over £200 worth of content to be precise).
The movie experience is top notch, but if you are going to use this as a dedicated Blu-Ray player, I do suggest getting the PS3 Blu-Ray remote, as whilst you can use the standard included controller, it's far easier using the BD Remote.
Best of all, is Playstation Move, coming next month. On the surface it may seem like a Wii copy, but it's WAY more accurate & the games are more varied.
The most versatile console out there - By: Tom P, 07 Aug 2010
The PS3 is a great console, with Blu-ray film playback, a brilliant library of games including InFamous, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves & LittleBigPlanet, a good yet free online service & some very powerful hardware. The 250gb Slim is very roomy, which is very useful considering the amount of content available from the PlayStation Network. It's dead quiet & heat production is well managed, & the matte finish keeps it far cleaner than the gloss on the old fat PS3. With more potential still to be worked out of the PS3, it's definately a worthy investment for any gamer or even families.
Flawless - By: AK, 01 Aug 2010
I cannot say that I have owned all consoles to compare it to but after some experience with a Sony PlayStation 2 Slimline Console (Black) this was my next plunge. The reason I bought it was Gran Turismo 5 (PS3) but while waiting for it to come out I have tried it out with the Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - Platinum Edition (PS3) & Need For Speed: Shift (PS3), as well as with many DVDs as a DVD player.
It works extremely well, with everything being pretty much self explanatory - here plug & play really does the expression justice (as opposed to the Microsoft 'plug & pray' alternative). Connecting it to two different TVs workes like a charm, the wifi was detected immediately, setting up different users was easy,in fact it's just as hoped for - one can do everything required without ever having to get out the manual.
In terms of gaming my experience will probably be coloured by the games played but it has been great so far - the realism & graphics possible are very good & lifelike (in terms of that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - Platinum Edition (PS3) works better as far as car rendering is concerned, Need For Speed: Shift (PS3) is quite OK as far as the surroundings go.
Generally it has been extremely stable, without any glitches or excessive heaing up even when switched on for weeks on end. The controller is super sturdy & will handle ample abuse (aka constant very intense gaming), the batteries being good enough for a full day's worth of playing without recharging. The USB cable is a bit too short to use it playing plugged in, though.
In terms of controling the console, the controller works well enough - with the console being adapted so as to allow every function being easily done with the controller alone. On top of that I got Sony Blu-Ray Disc Remote Control (PS3), which transforms it into a 'normal' DVD player for people less gaming inclined - something probably worth the limited extra outlay.
I suppose your choice between this & Xbox 360 250GB (250GB Hard Drive) (Xbox 360) is likely to be more driven by your preference for games (each comes with some exclusive titles) -in any case, the PS3 is a great console & you are unlikely to regret buying it.
GREATEST CONSOLE EVER! - By: A92, 30 Jun 2010
The Sony PS3 is the most hi-tech piece of gaming equitment out there.
The graphics, game play, intensity, enjoyableness & the sheer excitement of the PS3 is second to NONE.
