MotoGP 08 - By: Richard Birkett, 03 Jan 2009
Another year passes & once again we sit,in anticipation, to play the latest 'Moto GP' licensed game offering. This year has seen a changein proceedings as publisher 'CAPCOM' take over from 'THQ'.
First things first then: improvements. Well, not only has the graphics been updated to perhaps produce one of the most impressive looking games on the system, but also the number of classes has cruised from 1 (MotoGP) to 3 (125cc & 250cc), including licensed teams, riders & tracks from the '08 season. CAPCOM have certainly brought their brand to the table & delivered. Alas, however, credentials are not the end all regarding a polished game. Gameplay, options, events, rewards all need to add together to provide an experience worth waiting for.
The gameplay is the first topic to mention. Vastly different from its predecessors (Moto GP Ultimate Racing, MotoGP 06), the gameplay withdraws from the simulation inspired racing module as CAPCOM takes the reigns of the racerin a way that no gamer agrees upon. Settings are included in-game including: advanced, simulation & arcade- all differing to varied degrees, although it can not be argued that the model has taken a step into the direction of an arcade racer. As I have said, it is difficult to appreciate other's feelings towards this step, however, I for one, have enjoyed the more laid back approach to the MotoGP gameplay style. No longer is it necessary to apply different amounts of pressure to front & back brakes, thus giving a superior, beneficial gameplay experience. The expected fall & trip over the grass & gravel is, as has always been, punished- perhaps even more so, moulding a firm hold into reality- all the better for it. The AI has also taken a firm overhaul, opponents no longer stick to 'racing rails' & instead are often seen 'biting the dust' as it were,in front of ones very eyes. The AI can be set to either one of four difficulties (Easy/Medium/Hard/Champion), offering a suitable opposing force to any wannabe racer.
The niggling doubts within my mind relyin the game's longevity. Game modes abound albeitin an add-on sort of fashion. Career is perhaps the most impressive where one startsin 125cc class & progresses from season to season, unlocking new team rides & upgrading your bike through the use of career points, simplistic yet effective. Other game modes include the usual time trial, quick race & championship.
Multiplayer is now exclusively limited to online. The lack of local multiplayer is frustrating, which not only could have strengthened its longevity, but also provided a great deal of that word, fun!
MotoGP 08 is an adequate racing experience with gorgeous visuals & gameplay to match, let down by its lack of local multiplayer & minimalist modes. Bring an open-mind to the proceedings, sit down, & enjoy.
Why such negative reviews? - By: C. Scott, 09 Dec 2008
Ok so I am not going to give you a MAHOOSIVE lo-down on this game, I'm sure you will find plenty of proffesional reviews online... I will give you my opinions on what is good & not so good on the game...
THE GOOD:
Good solid racing enjoyment.
Accuratley scaled tracks.
Accurate differences between bike performances which, realisticly DONT overpower other bikes so there is no "Ultimate Unbeatable Motocycle".
The inclusion of 125cc & 250cc bikes & races.
Lots of things to do - Lengthy Career with various customisation options such as amount of laps per race, weather etc, quick race mode, online mode, challege mode, time attack mode....
THE BAD:
The bike physics at some points are absolutley dreadful, honestly, I am appauled to be fair however this doesnt really affect the gameplay directly.
The simulation mode with championship A.I setting is brutally difficult,in my opinion but some would say this makes the game challenging.
The graphics seem bland with the exception of the bike & rider.
REASONS NOT TO BUY THE GAME:
If you are a graphics whore, you wont want to buy this game JUST for graphics.
If you want some challenging achivements as these are pretty easy, with the exception of the few Simulation & Champion achievments.
Overall...
I havent actually reviewed it, I just said some flaws & good things, butin my opinion, its a great game & if you love the MotoGP, this is YOUR game.... simple, 5 stars
MotoGP 08 - worst motorbike game ever ? - By: M. L. Robertson, 24 Nov 2008
For those that remember how good MotoGP was on the original xbox - it was great to see the 360 impress with MotoGp 06 & although the improvements for MotoGp 07 were minimal they were starting with a very well made title, I really thought this was a franchise to stay but unfortunately CAPCOM made this years 08 title (who also made the terrible SBK08) This new game is very disapointing for fans of the previous versions. All the smooth game play has gone & been replaced by a jerky lookalike. The game play has no feeling of speed, the cornering is non existent & what used to be (ouch) crashes look like they are always the same &in slow mo. Its a shame THQ couldnt keep this title to have brought us the new tracks for the season - DO NOT BUY

Milestone come up trumps again - By: Stevie_2008, 29 Oct 2008
Milestone have really spoilt us this year, we get SBK 08 & Moto GP 08 from themin a matter of months, & i'm pleased to say this game is just as fantastic as SBK 08 is.
The graphics are improved over SBK 08 & what is differentin Moto GP 08 is they give you 3 handling options, Arcade, Advanced & Sim, & these are just about perfect for what they are, I'm particuarly happy with the Advanced option which make it more involving than arcade but without the frustation of full simulation.
Arcade enables anybody to just pick up the game & get right into it, being able to compete & get the bike round the track easily, Advanced will make the back wheel slide out if you over accelerate while the bike is still leaning on the side of its tyres, & sim... well, although its not the hardest simulation ever, if you accelerate just a tad too much whilst on your side you come off every time, & running onto the grass or turning on the rumble strip will also leave you on the ground. The other reviewer who is complaining about the back wheel sliding out, should set it to arcade handling & i'm sure he'd be happy then.
The bike has two on bike cockpit views, both of which work great & we have two new tracks of sorts, the Qatar track although not new, is now raced at night, rather like the Singapore GP wasin Formula One, it is a nice change & looks really great racing at nightin the dark. The other track is Indianapolis, it is the same track that they used to racein Formula One, but for some reason they race itin the opposite direction.
The game also has the 250CC & 125CC classes with all the bikes & riders from the season. The 125cc class has 34 bikes on the track! I've never seen thatin a bike game before ever.
This game pretty much has the lot, great looking, fast, good handling; & choices to suit casual, experienced & hardcore bike gamers alike, & a 5 year career mode to boot! I'm so glad Capcom gave the reigns to Milestone to make the MotoGP games now, MotoGP & Superbike are nowin the hands of the best bike game makers out there, all we need now is a next gen 'Road Rash' game & it would be all you could ask for.
