Nothing to get excited about - By: J. Roberts, 04 Jan 2009
Its another game i am thoroughly annoyed with. The 3 star rating is warranted.

I won't go into the story as others have. The graphics of the game are excellent, gun details are incredible & the sound of the guns & explosions are also amazing. I am afraid though that it is totally over hyped.

The fire scenes, which everyone seems to bang on about are good but really after you have burnt a few guys to death & smoked out a few shacks its boring.

The gameplay is lifeless & frankly it bored me from the start with a massively long opening scene. No background is given, your simply a guy sittingin a taxi & you have to kill some Lord of War type arms dealer. Its not that there is anything horribly wrong with the gameplay but its too drawn out, its too far to travel from one location to another. On the 360 as well, the stupid save system ( you can only savein particular locations which you have to capture) means that you might encounter a check point with 10 guys who just shoot you pieces & then you have to go back 30 minutes to your last save! come on now Ubisoft, that save system went out years ago!

The cars & boats are also a major short fall. They are all the same, they all handle the same & have the same speed, so whats the pointin having different ones at all? As soon as a game has the official use of the Jeep trademark then you know yourin trouble!

The game does not know what it wants to be & therefore fails to be anything good. Is it a shooter? It is trying to be but then to much time is spent traveling & fluffing about. Is it an RPG or MMO? It is certainly open world but there are few customizable options so no. What it does is try to blend the best bits from shooters, RPG's & MMO'sin an attempt to create a masterpiece & they have failed, simple.

I am also confused about the name, Far Cry 2? It is completely different to Far Cryin every way imaginable so i am stuck thinking why bothering using it at all.

Online is pretty naff as well.

Its a shame, i really wanted to enjoy this game, i have tried really hard to forgive its pathetic save system & keep trying but i can't. I'm too bored now, i have given it 6 hours, i've done a few missions & they are all the same. The worst thing about it is that i am not gripped by the "story" or the gameplay. So i'm sorry Ubisoft, nice try but you've failed.
rent before you buy...for some, not others - By: Dr. V. R. Moore, 31 Dec 2008
For me, the game took a while to get into. At first, the tedious, overdrawn animations of actions such as opening a door or sitting down at the weapons computer really got to me. Then there's the bizarre varying speed at which you look around (with the right stick), making sniping & frantic close quarters battles more of a struggle than a pleasurable experience. I couldn't be bothered to endure this sub-par FPS, so I threw the disk backin its case, & resided back to the ever-entertaining world of COD4, which is, for those who haven't played it, without a doubt the best game on the 360, if not the best game I've ever played. Anyway, back to Farcry. On giving it a second chance, I found that having a few more gunsin my arsenal really opened up my oportunities, & added a whole new immersingly enjoyable level to the game. I could play stealthily, with silenced weapons & a dart rifle, creeping around unseenin the bushes, systematically picking off my enemies with expert precision (you get used to the afore-mentioned 'bizarre' looking around system). On the other extreme, I found it hilarious to romp into a camp swarming with enemies, flying at me from all directions, only to whip out a grenade launcher & watch the explosions shoot up all around. This is what keeps me playing through the profound trivialities infecting the game which, sadly, cannot be ignored, & are what prevent the game from reaching award standard. Having written this review, I must point out I've never played the original for more than about 5 minutes, so don't have that from which to draw an anticlimatic experience. Overall, it's a game that is annoying relatively frequently, but that is- at it's core- a fun experience. Definitely one to pick up cheaply if you're looking for a new challenge after playing through the monster titles of late.
Flawed Diamond - By: Mr. R. J. Tomlin, 25 Dec 2008
Well this is overall a pretty good game, but has a few nagging flaws.

The Plusses:

1. Graphics are fantastic

2. There is a great selection of weapons, which are upgradable.

3. There is an open sandbox style of play, you get various missions & sidequests, but these can be donein a variety of ways.

4. Weapons degrade, which makes purchasing new ones a sought after incentive. Plus also allows use of some 2nd hand guns that you wont unlock till later at the arms dealers. It makes refreshing change to include this variable.

5. AI is fairly good. Guys will sneak up on you, flank you & shout for help

6. The missions can be quite interesting, though more so from chapter 2 onwards.

7. I liked the graphical healing. No just walking over a medpack. Stopping to prise bullets from my leg with pliersin the middle of a firefight was much more gritty.

The minuses:

1. When travelling, you constantly get attacked by enemy vehicles & have to deal with roadblocks. You have to fight your way to locations, which at first is ok, but soon gets repetitive. You have to rinse & repeat these fights to get anywhere, but especially by road.

2. Pretty much everyone is your enemy. Both the two factions soldiers will shoot you on sight, as your missions for them are considered secret. It would have been better to have more factions & a friendly status score (As usedin mercenaries 2) to dictate how they react to you.

3. The story is pretty weak. You are sent to kill the Jackal arms dealer, who is perpetuating the war. However, he spares your life several times, & it seems hard to criticise his warmongering, when you are blasting your way through thousands of goons constantly. Any sane man would have got out of the country with a haul of diamonds, rather than stay, spending them on more guns.

4. The missionsin chapter 1 aren't as interesting as the ones from Chapter 2 onwards. I nearly gave up on the game initially, as it was repetative. However, the gameplay got much more interesting from Chapter 2 onwards, with missions including defending a barge, a prison break & dropping a bomb from a bridge onto a boat underneath. Also by this time, I had access to much more interesting weapons & gear.

5. There are only a couple of silenced gunsin the game. It would have been nicer to have silencer upgrades (Maybe at the cost of fire rate or range) on more weapons (A silenced sniper rifle was sorely missing, the dart rifle came close but was very slow).

6. It would have been nice to have upgraded one off weapons that you could pick up from the dead bosses & top targets. These could have been new models not availablein the arms shop. Or existing ones with better accuracy, rate of fire, capacity or decoration than the normal models. This would have given an added incentive to some missions & sidequests. Maybe they could have also had some hidden around like Easter Eggsin the game, a bit like some weaponsin Fallout 3.

7. The malaria factor was pretty annoying. It went against the sandbox idea, as you had little choice than have to hunt down more medicine. One mission included blowing up kilns for a malaria vaccine. This seemed crazy, that you wouldn't get the vaccine first before blowing them. This conflicted with the malaria idea totally.

Allin all a good game, worth sticking with to get past dull Chapter 1
The great graphics, weapon choice & durability, & sandbox enviroment make it a great gameplay experience, that moves away from most on the rails fps's around. I predict if certain flaws are sorted out, then the next game Farcry 3 will be a gaming classic.
Simple repetitive game - By: Mr. T. K. Sloan, 25 Dec 2008
I am now at 25% & find game is boringly repetitive.
Drive to get assignment, do assignment, drive to get another assignment
Each mission is similer to last & at times I felt I had used wrong back up which can occur.
Sticking it outin hope it may get better
Call of Duty 5 rubbish, so get FARCRY2 - By: Glossy Cream Cake, 24 Dec 2008
Without a question this is the best first person shooter multiplayer game out there. Its got the oldschool PC feel to it. Forget about your Call of Duty for a bit (plus Cod5's rubbish) & play this game, you will also be hooked.
Havent really played the singal player game yet, bein this day & age its all about the multiplayer.
The only problem with this game is the server, its just like GTA. You have to waitin a loby untill the host starts the game. To beat this, just be the host yourself & tell your online missfits what map your on. In no time your loby will be full.
Like Tony the tiger says, its grate......
