stars... - By: MR T O HORANSZKY, 08 Dec 2009
It deserves 5 stars, I think. During playing the actions it's as spectacular as the cut scenes. You can find everything: action, challenge, story, fun etc. ...OK, you can find some inexplicable difficulties, but not too annoying ones. :)
Fast fun - By: A. Griffiths, 30 Aug 2009
Devil May Cry 4 simply adds more demon slashing action to the series & doesn't really go anywhere new, however it looks amazing, so if you just want fun gameplay & some fantastic architecture to admire, you'll have a good time with this.
This time around we have a new character called Nero who livesin a city called Fortuna that seems to be suffering a demon outbreak. Worse still, none other than Dante himself has appeared & done something shocking that puts him squarely on the side of the bad guys! Can this be true? All will be revealed if you play the game...
As you would expect, the game charts your search (as Nero) through the land, fighting monsters all the way, searching for Dante. You'll travel through the elaborately detailed city, a huge castle, a lush jungle & several other locations, all of which look superb. I honestly spent several minutesin each area just enjoying the view!
The graphics are amazing. The gameplay is also great fun, but as it mainly consists of fighting, this means it is familiar & not really changed from the other games of the series. You simply enter a new area, see that familiar "blocked exit" & then kill everything so that you can progress onward. The designers have added a few new bits & bobs, such as a dice rolling "board game" section, plus some new gimmicks like time-slowing devices & controllable masonry, but the general feel is the same. Nero looks & behaves almost exactly the same as Dante, so with his silver hair, black clothes & long coat, you won't really notice that you are playing a different character most of the time. Of course his moves are different, & he has a new "reach out & grab" move that I really liked (and which is the only really different thing about his set of skills), so things do feel a bit new here.
So how hard is the challenge? Well I'm pleased to say that it's no breeze, but not hair-pullingly difficult. I found DMC1 very tough, DMC2 easy, & DMC3 I was too scared to play until they brought out the directors cut with an easy option! But on DMC4 I played on "Devil Hunter" mode & it was just the right level of challenge. The bosses were still pretty hard but I managed to cope with them - until the point where Nero has to fight Dante himself...oh my god at first I thought this was going to be the end of the game for me, but after much practice I finally learned what was required to beat him (hint: think of what Nero can do that Dante can't). After that, things got easier again for a while, & Dante becomes a playable character for a while - hooray! There is an impressive ending with both characters having to engagein epic battles, so it's all quite good fun.
What you might be disappointedin is the fact that the areas of the game get re-recycled for Dante once you finish the first half the of the game with Nero. You also have to learn how to control Dante's skills just when you have played Nero long enough to be an expertin his moves - & THEN you have to switch back to Nero again right at the end of the game after becoming familiar with Dante! Monsters look good, although not as creepy...I didn't think the Scarecrows were as good as the Marionettes at the lower levels, & the Mephistos didn't spook me like those Sin Scissors used to (I think it was all the crazy cackling).
Anyway, the bottom line is that it's fun. Not a long game - unless you play around with the extra modes & the Bloody Palace - & not with much depth, but it still packs a punch, so it's a good way to enjoy the visual capabilities of your PS3.
Rent it, good first half, awful second half - By: Mr. A. D. Foskett, 06 Aug 2009
I am new to the Devil May Cry series & had a go on DMC 1 years ago & thought it was ok so I gave this a try...
Firstly, I apologise to any hard-core DMCers out their but I thought this was awful. The graphics are average-good by PS3 standards & the storyline seems interesting if you are DMC fan however I really didn't have a clue what was going on but that isn't my gripe with this game.
You start off as Nero who as mentionedin previous comments has limited moves but I was really enjoying trying to string combo's together & eventually succeeding. Howver around about half way through the game you change character to Dante. Dante's moves are hugely complicatedin comparison & to make matters worse you end up basically playing the first half of the game again, even the bosses are the same. I havn't completed it yet & may not even bother.
My advice to any newcomers to the series is rent it, play it on the easiest mode, complete itin a few days & give it back.
Big game, Big value - By: Rocket Scientist, 02 Jun 2009
Fans of the Devil May Cry series will probably know what to expect from another instalment - epic boss fights. Frantic, acrobatic swordplay & the potential to look super cool while doing it without having to put too much effort into it.
What they might not expect is a fleeting cameo by Dante & instead having to use a new player character, Nero, who is all but a carbon copy of Dante anyway. Nero mirrors Dante's abilities too, so the transition is virtually painless. Also, he has the advantage of a demon hand which he can use to grab throw enemiesin the midst of battle or even swing across long distances, Spider-Man style.
The fixed perspective is still present and, sometimes, annoying but this is a fixture of the series & it wouldn't be DMC without it. There is one particular section where you are running into the camera through a moving forcefield which is rather tricky - but overall this has been keptin check & never threatens to spoil the fun. The beasties are plentiful, varied & beautifully animated. The action comes thick & fast & the location graphics are nicely realised.
It all seems very satisfactory as Nero faces off against the main boss, however...
However indeed. This is where the game surprises - it's not over, it's just begun. Player control switches to Dante, allaying all fears that he had been tradedin for a younger model, & the game just goes on & on. More boss fights, more power ups & some of the craziest new weapons are thrown into the mix.
There are twenty plus big stages to this game, plus a plethora of hidden challenges & this gives the game genuine re-play value. The storyline is ridiculous, but entertaining, as you might expect from the series with the entwined fates of Dante & Nero leading to a epic tag team battle against a massive multi-stage boss that nods to God of War 2.
This is a awesome title, brimming with action & consistently upping the ante. The developers have thrown the kitchen sink at this one & it really pays off.
If you are an old hand to DMC, then this will certainly be more than you bargained for.
If you are new to the series, then lucky you. Capcom are spoiling you.
Great, funny game!!! - By: sportsboy01, 26 May 2009
I enjoyed the game a lot.
It is a great fun to combine all the moves & techs to long & impressive combos.
Story is not that big, but very good staged. Especially the change of the characterin the midth of the game is great.
Only the extreme 'reuse' of the settings could have been made better.
