Fun, while it lasts - By: Reviewer, 24 Nov 2007
Having played the original podracer game on N64 & had many fun hours doing so, I thought id give this a go. The graphics are certainly far superior to the original, &in many ways this game improves on the gameplay also; new features like the ability to properly destroy your opponents racers & to earn money for it are a highlight. Overall, this game was fun, but the tournament mode doesnt last long (unless you want to complete it with every character, which gets boring after the second or third run through).

Another poor Star Wars game - By: R. Hamilton, 19 Jun 2004
Having played the original Racer game on the old Nintendo 64 (which I really enjoyed), I did not pick this one up for a long time fearing that it was just a port over to the PS2. However, it is a different game altogether. The action is supposed to take place 8 years after The Phantom Menace so Anakin is now a young adult, but he still has the same pod racer. All of the other characters from the Pod Racing section of the film are included, even though you have to win tournament races to access them. Making it a different game though has not made it a better one. It does feel like a bit of a throw back to older machines & did look dated even when it was originally released.
There does not seem to be much of a sustained challenge. I did not expect to win races at the first attempt as the computer races do not seem to be very competent. They only seem to overtake you if you crash but it does not take much effort to overtake them. The only challenge seems to be the opening up of hidden characters & tracks. Unless you like that sort of thing, there is not a good dealin it for you.
The game play itself is basic, but this is not a complaint. It does make a change to be able to pick up a game & not have to learn a couple of thousand button combinations to complete it. There are a couple of other things going for this game. The graphics are pretty good & you do get a real sense of speed, especially when you use the booster. The sense of speed does have problems though as the track can throw up some surprises that means you do end crashing into a wall that not even someone with the reactions of Superman would be able to avoid.
I did struggle to find these positives. Once again, Star Wars games flatter to deceive. It is a shame since those halcyon days of X-Wing & Tie Fighter that these tiedin games follow trends instead of setting them. Avoid, unless Star Wars is the be all & end of your life
Absolute waste of money. - By: SPASEMAN, 25 Mar 2002
I enjoyed the original racer on PC, sure it was too easy & you hardly saw the other racers but it was fun to test your reflexes against the incredible speed of the track.
Somehow, lucasarts have created a game that has worse graphics & worse gameplay than the original. The course design is so bad that it is often impossible to see where the track goes so you find yourself headingin the wrong direction or colliding with walls that appear a nanosecond before you hit them.
Check out Wipeout 3, that is a visual feast, this makes the PS2 look like an N64.
Finally the worst, most annoying thing is that the commentator is painful to listen to. You will cringe when he says "boy that's gotta hurt"in a cheesy american accent for the 50th time.
Do yourself a favour, spend your ... on MGS2, SSX tricky, GTA3 or any other game because this is pure...
A worthy addition to your collection - By: , 16 Mar 2002
This game is nothing like the rubbish Star Wars Racer, this is faster & more exciting. More Tracks, more characters & better graphics, this is fantastic!
